Following the murder and kidnapping of toddler James Bugler in 1993, I doubt anyone wrote these words: “they don’t need punishing, just let them off scot-free”. An innocent life taken away by two so-say “innocent” individuals. Owing to the Children and Young Persons Act (1963), these two murderers were prosecuted and stood trial, facing the confrontation and punishment any individual of an older age would deserve. And apparently there’s talk of increasing the age?! If this succeeds then parents of victims i.e. James Bugler would receive no justice or retribution for the sudden killing of their son and both boys would undoubtedly continue to develop in the mind-set that these actions hold no consequences. Our system would be promoting the development of the next Fred and Rose West… two more psychopathic serial killers.

Adding to this obvious advantage, if the child is charged and sentenced for whatever offence, the parent…
